Weekend Festival Honors the Legacy of Malcolm X
LEIMERT PARK — A celebration honoring the life and legacy of Malcolm X will be held this weekend on Degnan Boulevard in Leimert Park.
The two-day festival will feature Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Los Angeles) and educator / publisher Haki Madhubuti discussing “Black Men: Toward a Positive Self-Definition.”
“Malcolm X represents uncompromising black leadership,” said Torrence Brannon Reese, an organizer of the event. “That’s why we love him so much. He never sold us out as a people. He represents true black manhood.”
The Malcolm X Arts, Culture and Education Street Festival will include performances by local jazz artists, poets, and dancers. Comedians and social commentators, The Mooney Twins, will co-host the event.
The festival begins this morning at 10 with a display of the U.S. postal stamp honoring Malcolm X, followed by a march to Vernon Avenue and Crenshaw Boulevard, Reese said. There, festival organizers and others will rally for Crenshaw Boulevard to be renamed after the slain leader.
Festival organizers expect hundreds to participate in two communitywide photo sessions documenting local educators and black men. On Sunday at 5 p.m. “Everything With Soul” will present a performance featuring Billy Higgins, Art Davis, Dwight Trible, George Bohannon, Michael Session, Babalade, Charles Owens and others.
The festival is free and runs from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day.
