Builder to Seek OK for Hotel Complex

A local developer expects to ask Thousand Oaks soon for permission to build a hotel and retail development along Newbury Road.

Selleck Properties bought 9 1/2 acres near the southwest corner of Giant Oaks Avenue and Newbury Road in March with the intent to build a hotel for business travelers and a retail/restaurant development.

Because the property is near homes, Robert Selleck, president of the Westlake Village company, held a meeting earlier this summer to allow neighbors to voice any concerns they may have about the proposed development. A primary fear was the project would detract from residents’ view of the mountains to the north, Selleck said.

Selleck expects the Thousand Oaks Planning Commission to vote on the project by next summer.

“They like the idea of the property being developed,” Selleck said. “The neighbors and residents would like to see a development with the quality that Thousand Oaks is known for.”

Although a hotel company hasn’t signed on to the project yet, Selleck said he would like to offer travelers a place to stay that’s similar to a Courtyard Marriott. He said he expects to build two hotels with about 100 rooms each.

Amgen, a large corporate neighbor, already has a number of hotels to use in the Conejo Valley, said Dave Kaye, the company’s spokesman. Apartments are available for new hires who are in the process of relocating as well, he said.

“I don’t know if there’s a shortage of quality hotels,” Kaye said. “We don’t have a problem finding a place for visitors to stay.”

Businesses on the property, the Sleep Shoppe, Quintessentials and Newbury Park Meat Market, may be relocated to the new center, said Selleck.
