Standing tall for Watts Towers
Re “Funding Shortfall Hits Watts Towers” [May 20]: In the last year I visited Watts Towers on two occasions. On both visits I was very impressed with the docents who guided us through the site, recited the interesting history of Simon Rodia, but more importantly added an enthusiasm and respect for his creative legacy.
I lament the fact that, in Mike Boehm’s article, this city cultural landmark is cited for presumptive cuts.
Watts Towers is not only a treasure and a proud beacon in South Los Angeles -- along with the adjacent art gallery -- but also offers an exceptional cadre of knowledgeable men and women who are committed to the legacy of Rodia.
Let’s figure out how we can generate some financial support for this civic treasure. I’d be the first to make a contribution.
