* A Van Nuys judge granted a preliminary injunction preventing box-office tracker Paul Dergarabedian and his new firm, Media by Numbers, from using information allegedly taken from his former employer, Exhibitor Relations Co. The court, however, declined to bar Media by Numbers from soliciting business from its clients.

* Hewlett-Packard Co. said its research in nanotechnology might improve chips used in the communications, automotive and consumer electronics industries. The research may result in the creation of chips that are as much as eight times denser than those being produced now while requiring less energy.

* Casual dining chain Cheesecake Factory Inc. said President and Chief Operating Officer Peter D’Amelio was stepping down Feb. 2 for family reasons.
