Cadillac unveils CTS engines ahead of world debut in New York
Though we don’t yet have an official look at the all-new Cadillac CTS that will make its world premiere at the New York Auto Show, we do know what will move it.
The company announced Monday that a trio of engines will be available on the 2014 CTS -- none of which are V-8s.
The big daddy of the lineup (at least until the high-performance CTS-V comes out) will be a 3.6-liter twin-turbocharged, direct-injected V-6. GM says it will make 420 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque, and will go from zero to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds.
This engine will come in rear-wheel-drive form only and will be paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. GM says the car is expected to get 17 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.
The automaker confirmed that this engine will also be available later this year in the larger, front-wheel-drive XTS. This gives the XTS a much-needed boost in power over the current base engine Highway 1 tested last summer.
What GM hasn’t confirmed but is very likely is a similar version of this twin-turbo engine also making its way into the compact ATS sedan as the ATS-V. This car would be Cadillac’s high-performance answer to rivals like the BMW M3 and Mercedes-Benz C63. Expect a bump in horsepower over the version in the CTS too.
Cadillac’s foregoing a V-8 as the top engine in its midsize luxury car is a departure from the Mercedes E550 and BMW 550i, both of which come with V-8s. Other competitors, like the Audi A6 and Lexus GS, do not offer a V-8.
CTS buyers who don’t need or want 420 horsepower will have two options. A 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder unit will likely be the base engine. Similar to the turbo four that’s used in the ATS, this version in the CTS will make 272 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque.
A naturally aspirated 3.6-liter V-6 will also be available. It will make 321 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque.
Both of these engines will come in either rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive configurations and will be paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.
The world premiere of the all-new CTS is just one of many products GM plans on unveiling at the N.Y. Auto Show. Other introductions include a refreshed Buick Regal and LaCrosse, Chevy Camaro, the new Chevy SS sedan and the Chevy Corvette Stingray Convertible.
The CTS will be competing for attention with the premieres of vehicles including the Jeep Cherokee, Range Rover Sport and Toyota Highlander. Highway 1 will be covering the media days on March 26 and 27, so stay tuned for updates.
