Uber and Lyft have nearly overtaken taxis and car rentals among business travelers
When the ride-hailing phenomenon kicked off about seven years ago, business travelers were reluctant to switch from taxi rides and rental cars to app-based ground transportation.
But now business travelers are embracing Uber and Lyft rides in a big way.
In fact, Uber and Lyft now account for 49% of all ground-transportation expenses nationwide, according to a report by Certify, a Maine-based company that develops software to manage business expense reports.
The study, based on more than 10 million receipts and expense reports, found that car rentals represent 37% of all spending on ground transportation by business travelers, while taxis account for 14%.
The use of cabs by business travelers has dropped 51% since 2014, Certify found
The shift away from taxis has mostly been driven by costs: The average taxi fare was nearly $40 in the second quarter of the year, while for Uber the average was $25 a ride and for Lyft it was $21, according to the report.
