Another NBC gaffe at Olympics: Confusing Eisenberg and Zuckerberg
NBC ended the 2012 London Olympics the same way it began them: with another #NBCfail moment, which this time sort of involved Mark Zuckerberg.
The network, which during the course of the Olympics earned a hashtag dedicated solely to its failures and mess-ups, continued the trend with one more gaffe on the last day of the Olympics during the men’s basketball final on Sunday.
The camera turned away from the game during the first quarter and looked at actor Jesse Eisenberg.
“I know I’m gonna put that picture on Facebook,” said announcer Bob Fitzgerald.
While the remark was just a little weird, it did make some sense. Eisenberg, of course, is the actor who played Zuckerberg in 2010’s “The Social Network.” But then Fitzgerald went on to show his lack of knowledge for the tech world with his next comment.
“We’ve got every executive of note, it seems, worldwide, attending these Games,” he said.
Wait, what? Fitzgerald legitimately thought that Eisenberg was the co-founder and chief executive of Facebook. Or at least that’s what it seemed since he didn’t actually address Zuckerberg by name, perhaps because he may not have known or remembered it.
All in all, this isn’t a major mess up or issue, but it makes the already expansive list of NBC fails at the Olympics a bit longer.
