Snapchat screenshot alerts disabled by change in iOS 7

A change in Apple’s upcoming mobile operating system makes it possible for users to take screenshots of Snapchats they receive without alerting the person who sent the photo.

Snapchat is the popular Los Angeles start-up known for letting users send pictures and videos that disappear a few seconds after opening.

Currently, if the receiver takes a screenshot of the image, the app will send an alert to the sender.

But that alert won’t work when screenshots are taken on devices running iOS 7, which is due to be released in the fall.

A beta version of the upcoming Apple system is already in the hands of developers. An update, made available to developers Monday, changed the way the Apple operating system handles screenshots. As a result, Snapchat’s app cannot detect when a screenshot is taken using an iOS 7 device, such as an iPhone or iPad.

Snapchat might have to change the way its app is built in time for the release of iOS 7 to the public.

Regardless, users should be careful with photos sent over Snapchat. There are a number of workarounds that can be done to save pictures sent with the app without alerting the sender.
