Golden Globes 2014: Bordeaux lips rule the red carpet
Red lips are nothing new at a formal awards show, but this year’s Golden Globes ceremony was all about a deeper take on a crimson pout.
Deep-wine Bordeaux lips were spotted on many actresses, including Elizabeth Moss, Jennifer Lawrence and Rashida Jones, giving some weight to their ethereal gowns.
The lip color is a carry-over from fall fashion, which included a lot of grunge-inspired clothing and mid-’90s beauty looks.
“There has to be a brightness to a Bordeaux lip color in order for it not to look too Goth,” says makeup artist Kathy Jeung, who created Jones’ makeup look for the Globes.
“There shouldn’t be too much brown, but a shade of something brighter that pushes the color forward,” says Jeung. “You can still have depth with brighter undertones.”
On Jones, she used a color from Cargo appropriately called Bordeaux, which has fuchsia undertones that give it a pop while still looking deep and dramatic.
“Always use a lip liner with such a deep color,” Jeung advises. “It helps keep the color on longer and the lip shape stay defined.”
Jeung also recommends using a lip primer to get the dark color to stay on longer.
“Golden Globes night is a long one, so you need to apply a few layers along with the primer and liner,” she says.
