KFC’s Colonel Sanders is back, and this time, he’s Darrell Hammond

KFC is bringing back its iconic chicken salesman Colonel Sanders -- but this time, he’s “Saturday Night Live” alum Darrell Hammond.

“I’m back, America!” a white-haired Hammond proclaims with a Southern drawl in one of the chain’s new ads.

A series of TV commercials launching May 25 feature Hammond in the Colonel’s “office,” with a mandolin band and walking in traffic, through a baseball stadium and alongside a public pool with a bucket of chicken in his hand.

If you’re a fan of Hammond, you may notice his impression of Colonel Sanders sounds an awful lot like his Bill Clinton.

“In my line of work I’ve been able to do impressions of a lot of interesting people,” said Hammond in a statement. “But Colonel Sanders? It’s an honor to bring to life such an iconic figure ... and it doesn’t hurt that KFC is paying me in chicken.”

Colonel Sanders is also getting his own website, www.ColonelSanders.com, featuring the Hall of Sanders, where users can click on the Colonel at different stages of his life.

The original Colonel Harland Sanders dropped out of school in the sixth grade and was a farmhand, an Army mule tender, a locomotive fireman, an aspiring lawyer, an insurance salesman, an amateur obstetrician, a political candidate and a ferryboat entrepreneur -- all before becoming a chicken salesman.

The restaurant chain is also introducing some items to coincide with the debut of the new Colonel character. There’s Kentucky baked beans, Dole lemonade and a new Finger Lickin’ Good sauce made with the seasonings used on the Original Recipe chicken.
