Kraft Foods recalls 96,000 pounds of Oscar Mayer wieners for mislabeling

Kraft Foods is recalling 96,000 pounds of Oscar Mayer wieners for possible mislabeling. The wieners in the Oscar Mayer Classic Wieners packages may actually be cheese dogs.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, the cheese dogs contain pasteurized cheese and are made with milk, a known allergen, which is not listed on the classic wieners label.

The FSIS has labeled this a Class I recall, stating it’s a health hazard situation “where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.”

The cheese dogs were discovered by a consumer, who notified Kraft on Friday. The FSIS and Kraft both say they have not received any reports of problems related to the consumption of the product.

The recalled products were produced on March 2-3 with the establishment number 537H. They include 16-ounce packages of “classic wieners made with turkey and chicken, pork added” with a use-by date of June 16, 2014, and the product code 044700000632; and cases of 16-ounce packages of “classic cheese dogs made with turkey and chicken, pork added and pasteurized cheese product” with a use-by date of June 16, 2014, and case code 00447000005300.

The products were shipped to retail stores nationwide.
