Mountain lion spotted on La Crescenta elementary school campus

Three days into the new school year, a surprise visitor sneaked onto the campus of one La Crescenta elementary school Wednesday without teachers’ permission: a mountain lion.

The mountain lion was spotted by a custodian about 6 a.m. near a staff parking lot at Monte Vista Elementary School on Orange Avenue, school officials said. It was said to have jumped over a fence and into bushes on the other side.

By the time Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies arrived, the mountain lion had disappeared, said Deputy Caroline Rodriguez.

Teachers and administrators passed out flyers to parents Wednesday warning them about the sighting.

School officials planned to be on the lookout Wednesday, although they said it was common for coyotes and other wildlife to be seen in the area.
