‘Incoherent’ man fatally shot by sheriff’s deputy in Bellflower
Homicide detectives are investigating an officer-involved shooting Sunday after a sheriff’s deputy shot a 57-year-old man who authorities say was “incoherent and foaming at the mouth.”
Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies responded to a call reporting a disturbance at a business in the 16400 block of Woodruff Avenue in Bellflower around 1:30 a.m. Sunday, a news release said.
When deputies arrived, they were confronted by a middle-aged man who was “incoherent and foaming at the mouth,” according to the news release. A fight ensued, and sheriff’s officials said one deputy was punched in the head while another was pushed into a water fountain.
“Deputies tried to use a Taser to subdue the man but it had no effect,” the news release said.
During the fight, the man reached for a deputy’s holstered gun, which led another deputy to shoot the suspect, the news release said.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
One injured deputy was taken to a local hospital, treated and released. The other injured deputy was treated for minor injuries at the scene.
