Boy shot by BB pellet while playing at elementary school

An 11-year-old boy was struck in the calf by a metal pellet Thursday at an elementary school in Orange County after someone fired what may have been a BB gun, officials said.

A group of students were playing in the field area of College Park Elementary School shortly before 8 a.m. when they heard what sounded like BBs ricocheting off the portable buildings. One of the students was hit with what officials described as being slightly larger than a normal BB.

The teacher pulled the students into a classroom and called police, Costa Mesa police Sgt. Zack Hoferitza told the Daily Pilot.

The student who was hit returned to class after being treated in the health office, according to a news release from the Newport-Mesa Unified School District.

In response to the incident, the school has implemented additional safety precautions, which include enhanced supervision on the playground and field, the district said.

Police collected several BB-type rounds from the area and are investigating the incident, Hoferitza said.
