Castaic brush fire 80% contained; one lane of 5 Freeway closed
One lane of the northbound 5 Freeway in the Castaic area will remain closed until about 3 p.m. Tuesday as fire officials work on a brush fire that burned about 50 acres, authorities said.
The fire was more than 80% contained Tuesday morning, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department. The fire had threatened a mobile home park, but no evacuations were ordered, said officials with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
The fire started Monday in the Angeles National Forest, and flames backed down a hillside about a quarter of a mile from the Paradise Ranch Mobile Home Park, Fire Department officials said. Water-dropping helicopters made repeated attacks on the blaze.
At one point, all but one northbound lane on the 5 Freeway near Templin Highway had been shut down, backing traffic up for about five miles in Castaic, the California Highway Patrol said.
The blaze broke out on a day when triple-digit temperatures were recorded across Southern California. In nearby Saugus, the temperature topped out at 101, the National Weather Service said.
Earlier Monday, a 75-acre brush fire in San Bernardino County forced authorities to temporarily close Interstate 15 near the Lytle Creek area. That fire was about 45% contained as of Tuesday morning, according to Cal Fire.
