Children found locked in trunk of car driven by mother
A mother and father were arrested in San Bernardino County when deputies found them driving with their two children locked in the trunk, officials said Monday.
A third person in the car also was arrested, but his relationship to the parents was unclear.
A child was seen by a witness around 10:45 p.m. Sunday in the trunk of a black Cadillac at Baker’s Drive-Thru on Baseline Street near Palm Avenue in Highland, according to a news release from the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner.
Deputies stopped the car as it made a U-turn, according to the statement. When the driver, April Burgo, 32, of Escondido, opened the trunk, a 6-year-old boy and 8-year-old girl were found crying inside.
The car emitted “a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage,” and police believe the adults knew the children had been locked in the truck.
Richard Burgo, 29, of Wildomar, his wife and a third suspect, Brandon Rampani, 33, of Escondido, were booked and released on bail in connection with charges of cruelty to a child.
