Authorities search home, take dogs in hunt for killer pit bulls

Los Angeles County sheriff’s investigators seeking four pit bulls believed to have mauled a woman to death Thursday morning in the Antelope Valley community of Littlerock searched a home late in the day, taking away six dogs and detaining a man on suspicion of narcotics possession, authorities said.

Sheriff’s Capt. Mike Parker said detectives with a warrant working with animal control took six dogs, including some pit bulls, from the home and were conducting a search of a property near 115th Street East and Avenue S.

Parker said the resident was detained on narcotics allegations during the search. Parker said it was too early to say if the dogs were same ones that attacked the 63-year-old woman about 9 a.m. Thursday.

The woman was out for her morning walk when she was mauled by the four dogs. Her name has not been released. She died en route to the hospital.

Parker said a motorist saw the dogs attacking the woman, who was on the ground, and called 911. A deputy who responded to the scene saw one of the dogs, and the animal tried twice to attack the deputy. Parker said the deputy shot twice at the dog before it ran off toward the desert.

Hours after the attack, Los Angeles County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich, who represents the area, offered a $25,000 reward for information leading to the capture of the four dogs.

In announcing the reward, Antonovich warned residents to stay indoors and call 911 if they see the animals. Parents walking their children home from school were told to be particularly cautious.
