A car packed with firefighters ran over another firefighter who was lying in the roadway in Yuba County over the weekend, killing him, authorities said.

The incident occurred on Marysville Road about 20 miles north of Nevada City just after 1 a.m. Saturday, according to Fox40.

The California Highway Patrol said a 2002 Hyundai Accent loaded with six firefighters for the Hotshots crew of the U.S. Forest Service in Yuba County ran over a pedestrian lying in the roadway.

One of the people in the car called 911 to say they believed they had run over an animal. They stopped two miles away and two passengers got out, got into another car and drove back to the scene.

The pedestrian was identified as 32-year-old Camptonville resident Michael P. Kelly II, another firefighter for the U.S. Forest Service, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

CHP officials said alcohol may have played a factor, Fox40 reported.
