Four stranded hikers were airlifted late Sunday afternoon out of Griffith Park after being found in a “precarious position” near Vista del Valle Drive, Los Angeles Fire Department officials said.

The hikers were uninjured but airlifted “in the interest of safety,” said Brian Humphrey, an LAFD spokesman.

The rescued hikers were flown to a nearby athletic field as the sun was setting, Humphrey said.

The hikers were reported as stranded in a 911 call about 4:30 p.m., Humphrey said.

“This is something we do dozens of times this time of year,” Humphrey said of airlifting hikers from the park. “We hoist them aboard the helicopter to prevent them from being injured or others from being injured while trying to help them.”
