Jerry Brown records phone message for L.A. candidate Mike Feuer
California Gov. Jerry Brown has weighed in on the bitter battle for the Los Angeles city attorney post in next week’s election.
In a recorded phone message to city voters, the governor says that City Atty. Carmen Trutanich’s attacks on challenger Mike Feuer are ”misleading.”
The Feuer campaign said it is paying to spread the governor’s recorded message to voters “all across Los Angeles” on Wednesday.
At issue is a mailer the Trutanich campaign sent attacking Feuer for his support, while he was in the state Assembly, of controversial legislation that transferred some state felons to county jails or probation supervision to comply with court orders to relieve overcrowding in state prisons. When he ran unsuccessfully for county district attorney last year, Trutanich supported the so-called “realignment” legislation but now opposes it.
In the recording, Brown says he is calling “to set the record straight about negative attacks on Mike Feuer.
“Mike’s opponent is misleading voters by suddenly attacking a public safety plan he once supported,” the recording says.
The governor then goes on to praise Feuer as “a man of integrity who is willing to make tough decisions and stand by them.”
“City Atty. Trutanich embraced AB 109 only after it became law,” said Trutanich campaign spokesman John Schwada. “Little did Trutanich know that AB 109 would not be adequately funded -- funded to make it work.” Trutanich also challenged Feuer to debate the legislation.
