A roughly nine-mile stretch of Pacific Coast Highway was closed Thursday as the blaze moved toward the coast. Hundreds of residents in Ventura County canyons have been forced to evacuate as the fire made its way to PCH and Sycamore Canyon.

At one point, the Ventura County Fire Department sent 20 trucks to Cal State Channel Islands, where officials said flames charred the hills on the eastern part of campus.

Hot temperatures, wind and dry conditions were posing a fire threat throughout the region until at least Friday night. Firefighters hope to attack the flames by air sometime Friday if the weather permits it.
