Elderly women escape from burning limousine in Bay Area
Ten elderly women -- some in their 90s -- escaped without injury when the limousine they were riding in caught fire in the Bay Area, authorities said.
The Sunday morning fire broke out while the Lincoln Town Car was idling after picking up the women in a gated community in Walnut Creek, authorities said.
The women reportedly were on their way to celebrate a friend’s 96th birthday in Sonoma.
One of the passengers, identified as Mary Chapman, told KGO-TV that she and two others got out of the limo and helped the others, many dependent on canes and walkers, to escape.
Firefighters put out the blaze in minutes.
The incident was reminiscent of a fatal limo fire a little more than a month ago. Five nurses on their way to a wedding celebration were killed when their limo caught fire on the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge. The driver and four other passengers escaped.
