Cold weather alert extended through Wednesday for some L.A. areas
Los Angeles County’s top health officer on Monday extended a cold weather alert for several areas, even as forecasters said the region was due for a slight warming trend.
The alert is for areas where wind-chill temperatures are expected to fall below 32 degrees and includes the San Fernando, Santa Clarita and Antelope valleys, Pomona, Mt. Wilson and L.A. Basin areas.
The alert lasts through Wednesday, except for in the L.A. Basin, which is covered until Tuesday.
The frigid temperatures also prompted warnings from officials on keeping warm safely by not using stoves, barbecues or ovens to heat their homes and risk carbon-monoxide poisoning.
“There are places where people can go to stay warm, such as shelters or other public facilities,” Jonathan E. Fielding, the county’s health officer, said in a statement.
Children, the elderly and people with disabilities or special medical needs are “especially vulnerable” when outside during amid such low temperatures, he added.
