Man shot by LAPD during Mid-Wilshire altercation dies

A man shot during an altercation with Los Angeles police officers in the Mid-Wilshire area on Thursday has died, the L.A. County coroner’s office said.

The man, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center at about 5:50 p.m. Thursday, according to coroner’s spokesman Ed Winter.

The man is the second person to be fatally shot by the LAPD this week and the 10th this year. Eleven other people have been wounded in shootings by L.A. police officers in 2015.

Thursday’s shooting occurred on Sycamore Avenue near 9th Street, according to LAPD Cmdr. Andrew Smith.

Smith said initial reports showed that two officers from LAPD’s Wilshire Division were sent to the area about 8:40 a.m. in response to multiple reports of a man using a skateboard to break storefront windows near Wilshire Boulevard and La Brea Avenue.

When the officers arrived, Smith said, they saw a man matching the description of the suspect riding a skateboard and followed him in their car.

At some point, the man fell or jumped off his skateboard, Smith said. The officers got out of their car and tried to detain him but he did not obey their commands.

The officers became involved in a “violent, physical altercation” with the man, Smith said, during which one of the officers used a Taser on the man, but it didn’t appear to have an effect on him and the scuffle continued.

At some point, he said, the man grabbed the Taser from the officer and used it on the officer’s leg. The officer’s partner then opened fire with his weapon, striking the man in the upper body.

Police said the officers were not wearing body cameras. The names of the officers have not been released.
