1 Marine killed, 6 in critical condition after vehicle rollover at Camp Pendleton
Six Marines are hospitalized in critical condition, and eight others in stable condition, after the vehicle rollover accident at Camp Pendleton that killed one Marine.
Four Marines were treated and released, the Marine Corps said Friday.
The accident occurred Thursday during routine training. The injured Marines are in five civilian hospitals.
The vehicle was a 7-ton truck primarily used for transporting Marines, fuel, water food and supplies.
The Marine who was killed was identified Friday night as Cpl. Bryan Michael Lauw, 21, of Denham Springs, La. Lauw enlisted in June 2012 and served as an anti-tank missileman.
Lauw was assigned to the 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion.
“The loss of Bryan and the injuries sustained to our Marines is a tremendous blow to our battalion,” said Lt. Col. Christian Rankin, commanding officer of the 1st LAR.
The incident is under investigation.
Maj. Gen. Daniel O’Donohue, commander of the 1st Marine Division, said that the Marine Corps’ “first concern is for the welfare of our deceased Marine, the injured and their families. They are held close in our hearts and prayers.”
Marine commanders, chaplains, medical personnel and families have “come together in support,” along with the surrounding communities, O’Donohue said.
