May Day rallies to bring crowds, street closures to downtown L.A.
Plan ahead if you want to get around downtown Los Angeles on Wednesday, when May Day demonstrations are expected to bring area traffic to a grinding halt.
Some 30,000 people are expected to gather at Olympic Boulevard and Figueroa Street Wednesday to demonstrate in favor of comprehensive immigration reform. Streets and intersections throughout the area will begin closing at 6 a.m. and won’t reopen until as late as 9 p.m.
Most intersections on either side of Broadway -- Hill and Spring streets, between Olympic and Ord Street -- will be closed.
The Los Angeles Department of Transportation posted a list of DASH detours for Wednesday, starting at 11:30 a.m. Below are general instructions:
Route A:
City west direction: All westbound stops along 1st Street between Main Street and Hill will not be served. Westbound passengers are advised to use the alternative stop along 1st and Grand Avenue.
Little Tokyo Direction: All eastbound stops along 1st Street between Hill and Main will not be served. Eastbound passengers are advised to use the alternative stop at 1st and San Pedro Street (southeast corner).
Route B:
All stops from Temple and Hill to Broadway and Alpine Street (in both directions) will not be served. Passengers are advised to utilize alternative stops at Grand Avenue and Temple or Alpine Street and Broadway. Passengers who need to make their transit connections at Union Station may use the MTA Red and Blue lines.
Route D:
South Park: The following southbound stops will not be served: Temple between Los Angeles Street and Main; Spring between Temple and Olympic; Hill between Olympic & Pico Boulevard.
Passengers are advised to use alternative stops on Temple at Judge John Aiso Street, Los Angeles at 3rd Street, Los Angeles at 8th Street, or Pico at Hill.
Union Station: The following northbound stops will not be served: Hill between 12th Street and Olympic; Main between 1st and 2nd Street; the stop located along Temple at Los Angeles.
Passengers are advised to use stops on 12th Street at Broadway, Los Angeles at 2nd, Los Angeles at 1st or Temple at Judge John Aiso.
Route E:
City west direction: All westbound stops along 7th Street between Los Angeles and Grand will not be served. Westbound passengers are advised to use the alternative stop on 7th at Flower Street;
Fashion district direction: All eastbound stops along 7th between Olive Street and Los Angeles will not be served. Eastbound passengers are advised to use the alternative stop on Los Angeles at 8th.
