Mega Millions: Winners in California, Georgia to split jackpot
Tuesday’s much-anticipated Mega Millions jackpot, worth an estimated $636 million, will be split by the owners of two winning tickets -- one sold in San Jose, the other in Atlanta, lottery officials said Wednesday.
In California, the winning ticket -- with numbers 8, 14, 17, 20, 39 and a Mega number of 7 -- was sold at Jenny’s Gift Shop in San Jose, according to state Lottery spokesman Alex Traverso.
The store will collect a $1-million retailer bonus, he said.

Twenty tickets were sold nationwide that matched five of six numbers, just missing the Mega, and are worth $1 million each, except for two in California that are worth $2.6 million each because of different rules.
“It was a great run,” Paula Otto, Virginia Lottery executive director and director for multistate Mega Millions game, said in a statement. “We have two jackpot winners, but the important programs supported by the 45 Mega Millions lotteries are the real winners. During this 22-drawing run, the lotteries generated more than $300 million in profits for those programs.”
The jackpot, with a lump-sum cash payout of $341.2 million, is the second-largest ever for the Mega Millions game.
The largest was a $656-million jackpot split by winners from three states in 2012.
“For the lottery in general, anytime the jackpot gets this high, it’s always a really exciting time,” Traverso said. “Now we can wait for this person to come forward.”
