New lane opens on northbound 405 Freeway
A new northbound lane of the 405 Freeway was opened Friday between the 10 Freeway and Santa Monica Boulevard, the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced.
The additional lane stretches for 1.7 miles and opened at 5 a.m. It’s the latest mark of progress for the $1-billion, multiyear 405 Freeway widening project that has been inundated with delays and cost overruns, frustrating commuters and residents alike for years.
The project -– adding a carpool lane in both directions of the 405 through the Sepulveda Pass -- is a year behind schedule and is expected to be completed in 2014.
It was unclear how much relief the new lane was offering commuters Friday morning, as a big rig overturned about a mile north of the expansion at Wilshire Boulevard, blocking three lanes and spilling 700 gallons of diesel fuel onto the freeway.
