Two believed dead after plane crash, fire in Northern California
Two people are believed dead after a small plane crashed Tuesday in Butte County and started a brush fire that engulfed the aircraft.
The single-engine, two-seat airplane crashed off Neal Road in a remote canyon area about 11:30 a.m., according to a news release from the Butte County Sheriff’s Office.
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection “was the first agency on scene, and the aircraft was fully engulfed in flames upon their arrival,” according to the release. “The aircraft was badly damaged by crash and ensuing fire.... Deputies also believe there are two fatalities.”
A spokesman for Cal Fire said that when the agency arrived on scene, about 5 acres were on fire. The blaze “was contained a little past 3 p.m.” after it had spread to 21 acres.
