Two rescued after plane goes down near Santa Catalina Island

A single-engine airplane went down near Santa Catalina Island on Saturday afternoon and the two people on board were rescued by a recreational boat, authorities said.

The plane went down about 1:15 p.m. about six miles northeast of the island, said Coast Guard spokesman Adam Eggers.

The two people were rescued by a private, recreational boat that happened to be in the area, Eggers said.

The two uninjured passengers were taken to Catalina Island.

No details were immediately available about why the plane went down.

[For the record, 3:30 p.m.: Initially, the Coast Guard reported that a nearby ferry, the Starship Express, responded and rescued the two plane passengers. The two were rescued by a private boat.]
