Pomona police fatally shoot man who was suspected of wounding 2 people in eviction dispute
A man was fatally shot by Pomona police Wednesday after neighbors said he shot and wounded two other people while he was being evicted from an apartment.
The incident occurred about 7 p.m. in the 900 block of North San Antonio Avenue, according to Deputy Juanita Navarro-Suarez of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Authorities said the man was suspected of entering a residence and trying to kill a man and a woman.
Neighbors told KCAL-TV that it appeared the suspect, a resident of the apartment complex, opened fire while being evicted. The man shot and wounded the apartment manager and the apartment manager’s girlfriend, neighbors told the station.
The apartment manager was shot in the chest and his girlfriend was shot in the stomach and chest, according to authorities. They were taken to a hospital and were listed in fair condition on Thursday, according to sheriff’s Deputy Lisa Jansen.
After shooting the couple, the man fired at a second residence, authorities said.
A short time later, Pomona police officers arrived at the apartment complex and saw the armed man walking in the area of Columbia and San Antonio avenues, Jansen said.
Police fired at the man, and he ran into an alley at the rear of the apartment complex.
According to the Sheriff’s Department, the man engaged in a shootout with the Pomona officers and was struck by gunfire. At least three officers fired their weapons.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene, Navarro-Suarez said. His name was not released pending the notification of family members.
A handgun was recovered at the scene, authorities said.
The shooting was under investigation by the Sheriff’s Department, according to Pomona Police Department protocol.
