Alcohol or drugs may have caused fatal traffic crash in Poway

Alcohol or drugs may have caused the fatal early morning collision between a fire engine and a Honda in the city of Poway, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said Thursday.

An open alcohol container was found in the Honda in which a 19-year-old passenger was killed and the 44-year-old driver injured in the 4 a.m. collision with the fire engine. No firefighters were injured.

The 19-year-old Poway woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, Robbie Gillespie, a resident of San Diego, was taken to a local hospital and is expected to survive, authorities said.

The fire engine entered the intersection on a green light and with its overhead emergency lights on, according to sheriff’s Lt. Jeffrey Duckworth. The fire vehicle was its way to a medical emergency call.

The woman’s name was not released by the county medical examiner.
