Double-homicide suspect shot after standoff with San Diego police
Reporting from San Diego — A suspect in a double-homicide was shot by San Diego police early Friday after a three-hour standoff that ended in a struggle with officers, officials said.
Felipe Dejesus Vega, 39, was shot as police moved to pull him from his car, officials said. He was taken to an emergency center and is listed in stable condition with a non-life-threatening wound, police said.
Vega is suspected of fatally shooting Arline Iribe, 20, and her brother Alexis Velarde, 22, on Sunday night. The motive is unknown.
Police on Thursday night spotted Vega’s 1998 Oldsmobile Cutlass in the Southcrest neighborhood. After a chase that ended in a crash, police surrounded the car.
For three hours, Vega refused to get out, even when pepper spray was pumped into the vehicle. Finally, slightly after midnight, police moved in.
When Vega, who was considered armed and dangerous, reached for his waistband, an officer fired one shot, hitting Vega in the upper torso, according to Lt. Mike Hastings.
The officer was identified as Christopher Luth, an 11-year veteran of the police department.
