Man fatally shot by deputies in East L.A. was armed, official says
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a deadly shooting involving its deputies in East Los Angeles on Tuesday.
The shooting occurred about 1:30 a.m. near Miller Avenue and East Almanza Lane and left one male suspect dead, authorities said. The deputies involved were uninjured in the incident.
The shooting occurred after a bystander flagged down deputies responding to another call and told them there was a man in the area with a gun, NBC Los Angeles reported.
Deputies found the man and confronted him, authorities said.
“He had a gun and he didn’t want to be searched,” Lt. Dave Coleman told NBC. “They knew he had a weapon, and he didn’t want to cooperate.”
The man fought and pulled out a gun, which is when he was shot by deputies, according to NBC. He was pronounced dead at the scene and his identity was not immediately released.
The department’s internal affairs bureau and the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office will investigate the incident, which is standard procedure in all deputy-involved shootings.
