Suspect in wounding of 4 lawmen in Roseville well known to police

Authorities released more details Saturday about a shootout Friday in Roseville, Calif., that left four law enforcement officials hurt and sparked a nine-hour standoff with the suspect.

Authorities identified the suspect as Sammy Duran, who was arrested early Saturday.

“He is a validated gang member our officers have been dealing with for many years,” Roseville Police Chief Daniel Hahn told Fox 40 News.

An agent for U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement, or ICE, who was not identified, was shot about 3 p.m. while working with investigators from the Roseville Police Department to apprehend Duran, according to ICE.

Once officers made contact with Duran, 32, shots were fired. The ICE agent was shot in the leg, said Brian Jacobson, a spokesman for the city of Roseville.

Duran, armed with an assault-type rifle, fled and again shot at authorities, said Lt. Cal Walstadt of the Roseville Police Department.

One Roseville police officer was shot. Two other officers were injured by shrapnel.

Duran’s relatives told Fox 40 there was no evidence they are aware of to show he shot at the officers.

Roseville is about 18 miles from Sacramento.
