Man attacked with ‘very big sword’ in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district

Police in San Francisco are on the lookout for a man who stabbed a stranger in the stomach with a “very big sword” then ran off, officials said Wednesday.
Just after 2:30 a.m., a witness in the 400 block of Eddy Street in the city’s rough Tenderloin district reported seeing the suspect stab another man, Officer Carlos Manfredi said.
“They don’t have any real description, just that it was a very big sword,” Manfredi said.
The witness said the attacker didn’t say a word before approaching the 56-year-old victim as he stood on the sidewalk in front of his apartment then stabbed him in the stomach, Manfredi said.
Police said there didn’t appear to be any particular motive for the attack. Nothing was reported stolen.
Though it’s 2016, Manfredi said it’s not completely unheard of for someone to be attacked with a sword in San Francisco.
“You get a lot of tweakers that get these swords … you’ll find a sword of some type at a flea market,” Manfredi said. “You get people high on drugs [and] they do random stuff like this. It doesn’t happen often, but it wouldn’t surprise me [to hear it.]”
Detectives are combing the area for security cameras that may have recorded the incident, he said.
