Adult son pushed 70-year-old mother out of a window and killed her, police say

An elderly woman was killed Monday after her son attacked and pushed her from a second-story window in an apartment complex in Van Nuys, police said.

The fall was reported about 2:50 a.m. in the 7400 block of Hazeltine Avenue, said Officer Norma Eisenman, a spokeswoman for the Los Angeles Police Department.

The 70-year-old woman was arguing with her son when he pushed her out of the window, Eisenman said.

After pushing his mother, the man leaped out of the open window and lunged at her, Officer Irma Mota said. He then continued attacking his mother on the ground, kicking and stomping on her.

Police arrived to find the woman lying on the ground outside the apartment complex, police said.

The woman was taken to an area hospital, where she later died. Los Angeles County coroner investigators have not identified the woman because they still were trying to notify her family, spokesman Ed Winter said.

But police told reporters at the scene that the victim’s name is Carlota Vargas.

Her 40-year-old son, who later was identified as Fernando Vargas, was arrested in connection with his mother’s death, police said. He is being held in lieu of $2 million bail.

Vargas also was taken to an area hospital to be treated for leg injuries he suffered during the jump, police said.
