Nine people were shot in a barbershop in east Detroit on Wednesday night, and at least two of them have been confirmed dead, police said.

The shooting happened about 6 p.m. at Rockie’s Barbershop on East Seven Mile, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Those who survived have been transported to hospitals, police said.

“I can’t even imagine what would cause this type of violence,” Police Chief James Craig told the newspaper.

A police spokeswoman was quoted as saying officers were searching for two cars that were following each other and shooting back and forth before turning onto East Seven Mile, near the barbershop.

People in the shop were playing dice and opened the door when they heard gunshots, Detroit police spokeswoman Kelly Miner told the Free Press.

Craig said in televised remarks that there are two suspects and that police are looking for a 2004 white Impala, possibly with broken windows and bullet holes in the rear.

Craig said the barbershop was known to be a place where gambling took place.
