Dodgers place Jerry Hairston Jr. on DL, call back Justin Sellers
Was going to go with another bad hamstrung play of words, but the bad legs are coming too fast and furious now.
Jerry Hairston Jr. is the latest to head to the disabled list with a strained hamstring, the Dodgers recalling infielder Justin Sellers on Friday prior to their series opener against the Rockies.
Hairston originally injured his hamstring running out an infield hit Sunday in Chicago. The Dodgers put Juan Rivera on the DL with a strained hamstring on Wednesday. And center fielder Matt Kemp has been running gingerly with a sore hamstring since Saturday.
Hairston’s injury failed to improve since Sunday. He had an MRI on Wednesday. His DL assignment will be retroactive to Monday.
Sellers, 26, was just sent down May 4 when the Dodgers added Bobby Abreu to the roster. Sellers is valuable defensively -- he can play shortstop, second and third -- but was hitting only .150 with a .261 on-base percentage.
Sellers’ offense was also an issue last season, when he hit .203 in 126 at-bats, but at least he offers an occasional option at shortstop for struggling Dee Gordon.
