Ian Kennedy to San Diego: Dodgers fans can really boo the Padres now

Some trade deadline. Seen more movement in a three-toed sloth race. Maybe the word deadline was lost on the GMs this year.

The Dodgers, who left all of baseball trembling last year with a series of audacious trades, were oddly silent. Unless you count that Earth-shattering, last-second deal to acquire Drew Butera.

What, no bells go off? He was a triple-A catcher for the Minnesota Twins. Currently batting .229 for the Rochester Red Wings. Also, he’s 29.

Fear not, Dodgers faithful, the deadline still was not completely devoid of intrigue. The most significant deadline deal Wednesday was the Arizona Diamondbacks sending right-hander Ian Kennedy to the San Diego Padres.

This creates an interesting situation for Dodgers fans, which now have two of the three players they most despise in the baseball universe on a single team – Kennedy and Carlos Quentin. The third is Brian Wilson, but slinging venom his way is going to be a bit more difficult.

But the Padres? In a game head-throwing Kennedy and clavicle-shattering Quentin are both starting? Dodgers boo birds will have to go in training in anticipation.

That twosome won’t elevate the Padres to the Darth Vader status of the Giants, but will add some curiosity to a rivalry that exists only in the minds of those in San Diego.
