Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint: Groupie Doll a repeat winner
A favorite won the second Breeders’ Cup race in a row as Groupie Doll was a repeat winner of the $1-million Filly and Mare Sprint on Saturday at Santa Anita.
The 5-year-old mare took the lead on the far turn, extended it to two lengths entering the stretch and held on for a half-length victory.
Groupie Doll paid $8, $4.60 and $3.40. Judy the Beauty returned $9.20 and $5.40 while Dance Card paid $4.80 to show.
It was Groupie Doll’s 11th win in 21 races, almost all between six and seven furlongs. Saturday’s race was seven furlongs.
“It set up just like last year,” said jockey Rajiv Maragh. “It was a good trip and when we got to the quarter pole, I was like, ‘Whew, we’re passing horses.’ And I haven’t even asked her yet. She ran great.”
