Jordan Spieth becomes first teenage winner on PGA Tour since 1931

Jordan Spieth needed something special to become the first teenager to win on the PGA Tour since 1931.

Actually, he need two special somethings.

First, the 19-year-old holed out from a bunker on the 72nd hole to grab a share of first place. Then, on the fifth playoff hole, he punched out from the rough to save par and walk away with the John Deere Classic at Silvis, Ill.

The win qualified him for the British Open.

“Obviously I don’t even know what to say right now,” he said.

Spieth outlasted Zach Johnson and David Hearn in becoming the Tour’s first teenage winner since Ralph Guldahl won the Santa Monica Open in 1931.

The likes of Gene Sarazen, Seve Ballesteros, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy did not collect their first Tour victories until they were 20 years old.
