Five SEC players took money from agents, Yahoo report alleges
A day after Sports Illustrated unveiled a five-part series alleging football corruption at Oklahoma State, a Yahoo Sports investigation alleged that five SEC players took impermissible benefits while they were in college.
The list includes former Alabama star offensive tackle D.J. Fluker, former Tennessee quarterback Tyler Bray, another Tennessee player and two from Mississippi State.
We’ll see where this leads and how fast the NCAA responds. Alabama Athletic Director Bill Battle issued a statement saying the school was looking into the charge against Fluker before the Yahoo report.
Fluker last spring sent out a tweet that said he had taken money. “Yea I took $ n college so wat. I did wat i had to do. Agents was tryin to pimp me so I pimped them. Cast da 1st stone.”
Fluker’s agent said at the time that the account had been hacked.
One of the reporters on the Yahoo story, Charles Robinson, broke the story on USC running back Reggie Bush that led to major sanctions against USC and the stripping of the Trojans’ 2005 BCS title.
It’s too early to tell what impact, if any, the allegations may have on Alabama’s 2011 and 2012 BCS titles. Fluker was the Crimson Tide’s starting tackle both years before becoming a first-round pick of the San Diego Chargers.
The USC investigation took years to complete, and the NCAA has yet to act on major charges against the University of Miami.
