National park tips: This patch of redwood country is prime driving
Reporting from — Northern California’s Redwood National and State Parks stretch about 50 miles from the Oregon border south and the whole area is great driving, even if it’s raining or foggy, which is much of the time. The southernmost visitor center is the Thomas H. Kuchel Visitor Center on U.S. 101 at Orick. But my favorite driving stretch (free of roadside clutter and commercial signage) begins 6 miles north of Orick -- a 10-mile-long detour off U.S. 101 called the Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway.
