National park tips: Find this Colorado lake with a notable (but invisible) cachet

Reporting from  —  Other attractions in Colorado’s Rocky Mountain National Park get more attention, but I loved the time I spent on Grand Lake at the park’s western entrance. There’s a town of about 500 people alongside the water. But the lake’s greatest distinction is invisible: It’s the headwaters of the Colorado River.

In honor of this year’s National Park Service centennial, the Travel section is posting 100 park travel ideas and tips based on trips staff travel writer Christopher Reynolds has taken, along with photo-op advice from Times photographer Mark Boster. We’ll post one per day through Dec. 31.
