USA cancels ‘Necessary Roughness’
USA network has gotten rough with its drama “Necessary Roughness” -- canceling the series after three seasons.
The network will not move forward with a fourth season of the drama, the network confirmed Tuesday. The series, which starred Callie Thorne as a psychologist to athletes, showed promise with its debut in summer 2011 -- Thorne even landed a Golden Globe nomination for her role -- but the show didn’t prove strong enough in the ratings.
It amped-up its third season with several new regulars, including John Stamos, but that did little to bolster the show. It wrapped its third season in August with 2.36 million viewers, quite the drop from the numbers it brought in its freshman season. It’s first season finale brought in about 4 million viewers.
The network issued the following statement: “We are proud of this show and its writers, which had a unique ability to address topical subjects before they unfolded in real life on the sports pages. We want to thank [series creators] Liz Kruger and Craig Shapiro, the incredible cast led by Golden Globe nominee Callie Thorne and our partners at Sony Television.”
