8 hurt in Foothill Transit bus crash on 10 Freeway in Alhambra

Eight people were injured Tuesday night in the San Gabriel Valley when a Foothill Transit bus driver fell asleep and crashed into a retaining wall on the 10 Freeway in Alhambra, officials said.

The accident occurred about 8:45 p.m. near the 10 and 710 freeway interchange.

The Silver Streak bus, carrying 13 passengers, struck the wall, skidded across all lanes of traffic and crashed into the freeway’s center wall before coming to rest in the carpool lane, said Battalion Chief John Cermak of the Alhambra Fire Department.

“How it didn’t hit any other cars, I’m not quite sure,” Cermak said.

Eight people were taken to four hospitals. Seven, including the driver, had minor injuries. One passenger had deep cuts to an arm. That person was probably sitting near the window when the bus struck the retaining wall, Cermak said.

The California Highway Patrol has issued a SigAlert for the carpool lane and the No. 1 lane. A tow truck began removing the bus from the carpool lane about 9:30 p.m.

A spokeswoman for Foothill Transit could not immediately be reached for comment.

Foothill Transit is a multi-city transportation agency that serves the San Gabriel Valley.
