Off-duty corrections officer shot at gas station in Colton
Two suspects were in custody after an off-duty corrections officer was shot and severely wounded Thursday at a gas station in Colton, authorities said.
Officials said the officer was fueling his automobile at a Shell station in the 2700 block of Iowa Avenue around 8:30 p.m. when two men pulled up in a silver Dodge Durango SUV and asked for directions.
At some point, someone in the SUV shot the officer, who fell to the ground. The assailants fled.
Police who arrived at the scene moments later loaded the wounded man into the back seat of a patrol car and rushed him to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center.
The silver Durango was spotted about an hour after the shooting not far away. Police moved in when the SUV pulled up at a Burger King drive-thru. One man was arrested on the spot; the other fled on foot and was caught a block away.
A handgun was recovered from the SUV, authorities said.
A report on the wounded man’s condition was not available. His name was not released.
