San Diego Harbor police officer shoots and kills possible burglary suspect
A San Diego Harbor police officer fatally shot a possible burglary suspect during a scuffle Tuesday night in the parking lot of a Point Loma hotel, officials said.
The officer was on patrol around 10:45 p.m. when he spotted a man prowling around cars in the parking lot, “possibly looking to burglarize the vehicles,” said Lt. Paul Rorrison of the San Diego Police Department.
After he contacted the man, the officer “was immediately attacked by the subject,” Rorrison said.
The two fell to the ground, the officer used his Taser, and the man tried to take the officer’s gun from his holster, Rorrison said. The officer fired one shot.
The man was declared dead at the scene. The officer was taken to UC San Diego Medical Center with moderate injuries, possibly from the Taser.
The dead man’s identity is unknown, Rorrison said.
The officer was identified only as a nine-year veteran of the Harbor police, which is part of the San Diego Port District, a separate agency from the San Diego Police Department.
