Man shot and killed by Banning police officer at motel
A man was shot and killed by a Banning police officer Saturday night after a confrontation at a motel, the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said.
An officer responded to the motel in the 3000 block of W. Ramsey Street in Banning just before 7:30 p.m. after a hotel employee reported that a male adult, who was not staying there, was making guests uncomfortable by knocking on room doors looking for a female, the department said.
When the officer approached the man, he attempted to run away. A physical confrontation and then an officer-involved shooting occurred when the man pulled out a handgun, according to the department. An ambulance was called, but the man died of his injures at the scene, the department said.
The Banning Police Department requested that the Riverside County sheriff’s department conduct an investigation. The man’s identity has not been released, pending notification of his family. The officer involved in the incident is an 18-year law enforcement veteran and has been placed on paid administrative leave during the investigation.
